VOICES OF FREEDOM MUSIC FEST CELEBRATES THE 63RD ANNIVERSARY OF BROWN V. BOARD IN DOWNTOWN TOPEKA MAY 20
In 1954 the Brown v. Topeka Board of Education Supreme Court decision outlawed the "separate but equal" doctrine in public education and became one of the pillars of equality in our society. On May 20 the 63rd Anniversary of Brown v. Board and Topeka's historic role in it's legacy will be celelebrated with the VOICES OF FREEDOM MUSIC FESTIVAL from 2-7 pm on a production stage between 7th and 8th Streets on Kansas Avenue in downtown Topeka. A joint production of the Brown v. Board Foundation, Washburn University and Go Topeka, the festival will feature an ethnically and stylistically diverse lineup of terrific roots artists, messages from important recorded "voices" about the legacy of Brown v. Board, a mini Poetry Slam and more. The festival is free, family friendly and open to everyone - bring lawn chairs and enjoy an array of food trucks on site.
The lineup is stellar - Native American flute-centric folk artists INJUNUITY, Mexicana/Americana/Indie rock fusionists MARIA THE MEXICAN, the amazing contemporary gospel ensemble ISAAC CATES AND ORDAINED, KELLEY HUNT and a special finale collaboration.
---KELLEY HUNT "DANCE OF HEARTS" PROCEEDS NET 31,000 MEALS FOR JUST FOOD AND THOSE IN NEED OF FOOD ASSISTANCE IN DOUGLAS COUNTY
JUST FOOD Executive Director Elizabeth Keever has announced that proceeds from Kelley Hunt's DANCE OF HEARTS benefit concert Feb. 10 at Liberty Hall in Lawrence have totaled more than $6,200 in concert proceeds and additional contributions of cash and food. According to Keever the money will provide more than 31,000 meals for residents of Douglas County and the surrounding region who depend on JUST FOOD for food assistance.
"We are so grateful for this significant contribution towards alleviating hunger in our community. This contribution will allow us to stock our shelves this spring as demand rises. It takes a community to fight hunger and each person who bought a ticket to "Dance of Hearts" contributed to this incredible success. We could not be more grateful for the support of Kelley Hunt, Maria the Mexican, our generous sponsors and everyone who attended," said Keever.
"Each year we do this it's a partnership between our fans, the community, our terrific sponsors, everyone who puts their heart and soul into this show on stage and the staff and volunteers at JUST FOOD," said Hunt. "It is everyone's responsibility to make sure our neighbors - children, seniors, families - have enough to eat. It is unconscionable in our city, county and region that anyone should face these issues alone. I'm grateful to everyone who collaborated to demonstrate that we all understand when one of us goes hungry, really, we all do," added Hunt.
This is the second year for "Dance of Hearts". This year's result is an increase over last year's totals which provided 30,000 meals for JUST FOOD. To learn more about JUST FOOD and to make an additional contribution GO HERE.
KELLEY GETS 3 GUEST ARTIST TRACKS ON DUKE ROBILLARD'S "DUKE AND THE DAMES OF RHYTHM" DUE OUT IN 2017
Acclaimed Grammy-nominated guitar master Duke Robillard's anticipated new project of music of the 20s and 30s - "Duke and the Dames of Rhythm" - is in the final stages in preparation for a 2017 release. More details are forthcoming but we can tell you Kelley has 3 guest artist tracks on the album alongside other guests Madeline Peyroux, Maria Muldaur, Catherine Russell, Sunny Crownover and actress/singer songwriter Elizabeth McGovern. Featured on the tracks are Duke, of course, and a terrific collection of rhythm section and horn players. The arrangements are authentic to the period and beautifully played. From what we've heard so far you won't want to miss this one when it drops.
"I have been a huge fan of Duke's since the early days of my career when I first saw him perform live on the same bill at a big festival. In my opinion he's among the most thoughful, technically skilled, open-minded and inspired guitarists I've known - world-class by any definition and one of the only truly authentic blues guitar traditionalists. And a talented producer - the real deal in every sense. Plus, he's genuinely a first-class person. I am thrilled and honored to be asked to be part of this," said Kelley.
Stay tuned - we'll give you a release date as soon as we have it.

"She has been a mainstay of the Kansas City/Lawrence music community for decades, and she showed why during a 75-minute set that showcased her many talents: as a singer, a songwriter and a musician. Her refined blend of blues, soul, R&B and roots music aroused a crowd of a couple hundred, especially the new song, "Stand Up," a feel-good anthem that lit up the room." Tim Finn BACK TO ROCKVILLE / KANSAS CITY STAR re: Crossroads Music Festival
"...this work is both totally inspirational and one of the best CDs you'll hear this year." BLUES BLAST MAGAZINE
"More than bones prove beautiful on this scintillating release by one of soul's best kept secrets. As she rips across strong originals like the funky "Golden Hour" to high-torque, torrid testaments like the gospel blues of "Release and Be Free", Kelley Hunt's time has come."
"If there is truly a Higher Power, He/She should press PLAY on the latest release by Kansas City's Kelley Hunt. Rest assured that the takeaway will be, despite how everything's been going lately, everything's going to be okay after all...". - Eric Thom BLUES MUSIC MAGAZINE
"a beautiful work of art...It is an album you will want to hear over and over discovering something new each time." - TUMBLER
"Kelley Hunt soars on her new release and invites listeners along for the ride."
It is not very often that we receive an album that makes us sit down and really listen; like, grabs us and demands our full attention. Multi-instrumentalist Kelley Hunt has done exactly that with her new album, The Beautiful Bones. The album has depth, soul, personality, and nuance.
The Beautiful Bones, on 88 Records, is a 50 minute journey through these 12 windows into Kelley Hunt’s musical soul. Though some selections here are more blues or soul inflected than others, the entire album resonates with a quiet comfort firmly grounded in a gospel voice. The sound and mix on this album is first rate, and the music has an inviting clarity and freshness about it.
This album will definitely lift your spirits and make you smile, on the inside. - AMERICAN BLUES SCENE MAGAZINE
"Kelley Hunt's The Beautiful Bones is an album I wanted to turn up within the first few bars. So I did. There may only be 88 keys on a piano, but Kelley Hunt has a personal relationship with each and every one of them. By the time you've listened to The Beautiful Bones you'll be on your way to having that beautiful relationship as well." "The songs are each as unique and necessary as a color of the rainbow; they offset each other with their distinctive qualities. If you love blues, soul or gospel, you'll love discovering Kelley Hunt, who does them all exceedingly well. Her vocals are a fitting blend of styles as well. Her voice is incredibly powerful in its humanity." - PARCBENCH.COM
"I interviewed Kelley Hunt many years ago, for the 'old' Blueprint magazine on the release of her eponymously titled debut album, and quoted her as "a lady who plays piano in the two fisted style of the boogie masters, who writes songs that are fresh, valid and realistic in their appraisal of life, and who is capable of singing with a combination of power, tenderness, intensity and pathos that can one minute have you on your feet dancing, and the next be cutting to the depth of your soul. The lady's name is Kelley Hunt." Now, with her sixth commercial release (The Beautiful Bones) she has proven me right with this impressive set."
