Board of Education decision, the Supreme Court decision that overturned legalized segregation in America, television stars James McDaniel (formerly of NYPD Blue) and Roger Aaron Brown (The District) will appear as Thurgood Marshall and his mentor Charles Houston in a concert reading premiering the original play "Now Let Me Fly." Broadcast journalist Bill Kurtis will host. The performance at the Topeka Performing Arts Center Monday, May 17, commissioned through a partnership of The Brown Foundation and Washburn University, will be free to the public but tickets will be required. Actress and activist Yolanda King and blues singers Queen Bey and Kelley Hunt will be among the cast members and Ambassadors for Christ Music Ministry of The Historic Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama will perform. Board Historic Site, an event which will be attended by a great many of the nation's leaders and covered by the international press. Hundreds of readings of the play will occur on the same day across the country in a program called A Nation Acts. "Now Let Me Fly" is based on oral histories and personal interviews with the real people involved in the struggle for desegratation. In addition to Thurgood Marshall and Charles Houston, the play brings to life the unsung heroes and heroines who risked their lives and set the stage for the Brown ruling to desegregate schools in the United States.
In the concert reading Kelley Hunt will play a role and sing a duet with celebrated blues/jazz vocalist Queen Bey and members of the Kelley Hunt Band will provide passages of incidental music throughout the reading and will accompany the Ambassadors of Christ Music Ministry Gospel Choir along with Kelley.
